ORGAINVENT – ORIGIN INDICATION OF MEAT
ORGAINVENT has been developing and operating verification systems and certification systems at the agriculture – food industry and agriculture – energy industry interfaces since 1998
The first of these systems was the beef labelling system from ORGAINVENT, which had already been authorised by the German Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) in 1998 and represented the leading German labelling system until the end of the requirement for authorisation in 2014.
Its successor is the “ORGAINVENT System for the Indication of Origin of Meat”, which has been available for voluntary use by all market participants since 2015.
It is founded on the EU legal requirements (Reg. (EC) No. 1760/2000 and Reg. (EU) No. 1337/2013) and is verified regularly and independently by external certification organisations at all production and marketing stages
The ORGAINVENT “Origin” team is also able to support your company with the implementation of the indication of origin and traceability of meat and can compile individualised documentation, especially when voluntary declarations are used.
YOUR QUESTIONS
OUR ANSWERS
CHALLENGES FOR THE INDUSTRY
New or changed legal requirements – customer wishes – consumer expectations – critical NGOs
Companies must orient themselves in this field of uncertainty, need to respond promptly, and must not overlook any updates. Industry associations do not always take up these challenges and support the market participants.
Individual solutions between the supplier and the customer can lead to many different solutions, which can mean considerable additional expense for the company.
OUR SYSTEM SOLUTIONS
ORGAINVENT is a neutral service provider. We are not active in the manufacturing or marketing sectors ourselves. Instead, we draw on our many years of experience with our systems and our high level of commitment to solve your challenges.
Industry solutions have the advantage that all participants in the industry (producers, processors, marketers) are sat together at the round table and approach the challenges cooperatively. ORGAINVENT moderates this round table and works through proposed solutions with those involved. These could be joint decisions or industry-led systems.
ORGAINVENT establishes the system requirements in conjunction with the concerned parties and structures industry demands, legal requirements, verification and inspection scenarios. ORGAINVENT manages the systems and makes itself available as a point of contact.
INDICATION OF ORIGIN
“Duty ” – The legal requirements
The indication of origin of fresh meat must be implemented at every stage of production and marketing (slaughter, cutting, wholesale, food retail, butcher’s shops, farm shops). It is based on the EU regulations relating to beef labelling and the indication of origin of meat from swine, sheep, goats and poultry and the food information regulation, as well as other European and national legal texts that implement these regulations.
New since 1/4/2020 is the declaration of origin for the primary ingredient where this differs from the declaration of origin of the product. In the ORGAINVENT System, the origin of the “meat” primary ingredient in processed products (e.g. meat products, meat preparations, ready meals) can be indicated and traced.
“Freestyle” – Voluntary indications
Types of meat for which no statutory requirement for indication of origin has yet been stipulated, e.g. rabbit, venison or other exotics, can also be identified and tracked with the ORGAINVENT System. We do this by developing internal system regulations that are closely modelled on the aforementioned legal texts.
Special attention is given by ORGAINVENT to voluntary declarations, which are used to additionally endorse the meat. Category, breed, regional origin, rearing conditions, feeding conditions and branded meat programmes are declarations that provide added value to the meat and are in demand from customers.
THE ORGAINVENT-System
The ORGAINVENT System combines all of the legal requirements and the use of voluntary declarations into one system, thus offering its subscribers a uniform implementation for identification, traceability and documentation.
The ORGAINVENT System incorporates regular independent inspections by external certification organisations in order to monitor the correct implementation of the system requirements and be able to react quickly to deal with weak areas.
Subscribers to the ORGAINVENT System
There are currently (04/11/2024) 182 businesses from the meat industry and retail sector registered as subscribers to the ORGAINVENT System. They use the ORGAINVENT methodology in the process stages and at the operating sites listed in the following image

INDEPENDENT INSPECTION
Independent inspection has been embedded in the ORGAINVENT System since 1998.
In addition to their contract with ORGAINVENT, every system subscriber also enters into a contract with one of the independent certification organisations listed in the ORGAINVENT System.
Every operating site and every process stage (slaughter, cutting, processing, wholesale, food retail, butcher’s shops, farm shops) is regularly inspected on the basis of a checklist specified by ORGAINVENT that is designed explicitly to account for indication of origin and traceability. All of the employed auditors undergo an annual ORGAINVENT training course.
Inspection synergies with other certification systems – such as the QS System – are possible and desirable:
Following confirmation by the certification organisation in accordance with the dual-control principle and special approval by ORGAINVENT, every inspection report is stored in a database so that the inspection history can be evidenced at any time.
Any complaints relating to identification and traceability have the effect of triggering our sanctions system which, in addition to rapid assistance by the ORGAINVENT Team as a corrective measure, also provides for cautions and written warnings as well as contractual penalties in serious cases.
COOPERATION AGREEMENTS
ORGAINVENT enters into cooperation contracts with organisations that wish to give their label a systematic inspection structure. The label holder is then also subject to the ORGAINVENT System. A checklist corresponding to its own criteria is prepared and checked off together with the ORGAINVENT checklist.
We would be happy to advise your organisation with regard to cooperation with the ORGAINVENT System. Please address to Andreas Schmadel for further information
A cooperation agreement with the regional brand EIFEL GmbH has been in place since 2015. The use of this regional label makes the special and proven quality from the Eifel region (within DE, BE, LU) immediately recognisable to the end consumer. For the range of fresh meat, indication of origin with the ORGAINVENT System is mandatory for all label users.
37 companies with 59 sites make use of this cooperation agreement.
TRAINING & SEMINARS
The implementation of indication of origin of meat is not easy. Because of this, ORGAINVENT offers various types of training.
You can obtain further information on our range of training courses from Dr. Kirsten Schneehagen
Basic training
ORGAINVENT offers regular basic training at its head office for all subscribers. This includes the legal requirements as well as tips and tricks for implementation at the individual process stages. The half-day training sessions are broken up with lots of “activity” rounds in which our participants are able to apply directly the knowledge that they have acquired.
The basic training sessions are conceived as new or refresher training for all staff in ORGAINVENT companies (purchasing, production, labelling, QA, marketing, sales) and are free of charge for these employees. Because employees of various ORGAINVENT subscribers come together at these training sessions, there is always a lively exchange of experiences too.
Next basic training: March 18th, 2025, via MS TEAMS
Please register by March 10th at the latest. Please use the form below
If you have specific questions that should be answered in the training, you can send them to us – as well as label examples or examples of your documentation – by the same email. You will then receive the link to the Zoom training and further information in our reply email. You can find our privacy policy for events here.
Please have in mind that the training is held in German.
In-house training
Instead of you sending lots of staff members on a trip, ORGAINVENT will also happily come to you. The training sessions are oriented explicitly to your business and your processes. The examples (labels, delivery documents, etc.) are matched to your company. But there is no shortage of activity rounds here either, since they break up the training sessions and show you immediately what you have already learned.
We have prepared a flyer on in-house training sessions with further information for you (in german) and please contact Dr. Kirsten Schneehagen, if you need more information.
ORGAINVENT e-learning
All participants in our seminars receive access to our e-learning offer. there the knowledge can be deepened in short modules and applied in a quiz.

25 years of ORGAINVENT – Labelling of origin more relevant than ever
ORGAINVENT GmbH was founded 25 years ago on November 27th, 1997 against the background of die the BSE crisis. Since then it has successfully been taken care of verification systems and certification systems at the agriculture – food industry interfaces. The BSE crisis has now been over-come, but the issue of origin labelling has steadily increased in importance over the past 25 years. ORGAINVENT was able to continuously expand and consolidate its leading role in the labelling of origin.
In the press, "origin" is currently being discussed in connection with the labelling of animal husbandry. The two topics are often “lumped together”. Labelling of the origin of meat is repeatedly demanded, although this has long been mandatory for many products. However, there is no legal basis for the labelling of husbandry, i.e. the advertising of the form of animal husbandry on the farm. In addition to the labelling of origin, further value-enhancing advertising claims are made about the meat, e.g. about a specific region, breed or husbandry system.
The legal requirements for labelling the origin of meat have been successively expanded in recent years from initially beef to pre-packaged pork, poultry, sheep and goat meat and from unprocessed meat to processed products with meat as the primary ingredient. But the development is not over yet. In the discussion are the gastronomy as previously not included sales area and the extension of the scope to other types of meat, to the labelling of pork & Co. offered not prepacked at the service counter, meat products or products with meat products and other animal products (e.g. milk). In addition, there are various national rules of individual EU member states.
For market participants, this means that they constantly have to adapt to new legal regulations with their many pitfalls. This is exactly where ORGAINVENT comes in: Together with the companies, the basis for a functioning information chain is created and the veracity of the information provided is secured for the customer through neutral inspections. Systematic documentation is the key to secure traceability.
ORGAINVENT supports its participants in their daily work relating to traceability, documentation, correct labelling and the creation of customer information. Participation in the ORGAINVENT system always includes an obligatory neutral inspection for all operating sites, with the help of which the functionality of the system is confirmed. This means that the participants are also well prepared in the case of official controls.
With ORGAINVENT's many years of experience as a verification system, new products and process stages can be integrated in a legally secure but also practical manner. This is the particular strength of ORGAINVENT.
25 years of ORGAINVENT - and no end in sight.
